The website's founders, Gregory Monnier and Christopher Filippou,said that they knew something had to be done while staring back at a $900receipt for books in their final semester of college. "We came to therealization that our books were close to a third of the cost of our regulartuition," said Monnier.The problem of high textbook prices has been exacerbated in recent years dueto the fact that school bookstores have adopted the practice of charginghundreds of dollars for textbooks only to buy them back at a fraction of theprice. Additionally, in his paper "An Economic Analysis of Textbook Pricingand Textbook Markets," Dr. James Koch of Old Dominion University referred tothe textbook market as "Broken," noting that "The textbook market isremarkable because the primary individuals who choose college textbooks(faculty) are not the people that pay for those textbooks (students)."Prices have been driven up even further by the act of "bundling," which is theprocess of forcing students to purchase additional items along with thetextbook itself.
There has also been significant consolidation in the industryleaving only three large publishers left: Pearson, Cengage Learning, andMcGraw-Hill.
